Crossville 34 New Hope 7
Crossville, AL Sept 3, 2005
The Crossville Lions started off the Region 6 portion of the schedule with a much needed victory over New Hope. The Lions used a punishing defense and an running game that appeared to be in mid season form to put the game out of reach before halftime. Senior tailback-wingback Jonathan Martin rushed for 213 yards on 22 carries to pace the Lions.
Crossville would open the game with a strong opening drive taking the ball for 74 yards in 10 plays before Martin would score one of his four touchdowns on the night on a 19 yard run at the :55 second mark in the first quarter. The PAT was no good.
With 4:13 left before the half, Martin would strike again for the Lions on a 53- yard gallop to the end-zone. Martin would also score the two point conversion to put the Lions up 14-0.
The Indians, who were held to -7 yards rushing on 25 attempts, were simply not able to get anything going most of the night. The Lions defense, led by Michael Patterson, Andrew Freeman and Noie Yancey; forced 6 punts and held New Hope to only 6 first downs, to go along with intercepting two Indian passes.
Jonathan Martin would get the hat trick before half time, scoring his third touchdown on a 6-yard score with 30 ticks left on the scoreboard clock. The extra point was good as the Lions carried a 21-0 advantage into the locker room at the break.
Late in the third quarter, Martin struck yet again on a 49-yard scoring run. The PAT was good up the score to 28-0.
Sophomore Jordan Scott would rush 6 times for the Lions and score their last touchdown with 4:21 to go. The kick was no good, but the Lions led 34-0.
The New Hope Indians finally got on the board with less than two minutes left to spoil the Lions bid for a shutout as Wesley Martin hit Jerry Vest on a 69-yard bomb. The kick ended the scoring for the night as the Lions would go 1-0 in Region 6 play. Crossville will head to Sardis next week for another very important matchup.
