The 1972 campaign for the lions was not an easy one. Depth seemed to be the one thing to keep them from going over the hump. Going through the first half of the schedule was very rough. The Lions had trouble scoring and had trouble keeping the opposition out of the end zone. However, the last part of the season saw a great improvement seeing the Lions go 2-1-1 over the final 4 games. Some great players in the next few years got a great amount of experience during the 72 season. Many players that would play on the first playoff team in 1974, would learn the things that would lead to the first Area title in school history. Kevin Bearden was sensational in what many believe is the single greatest season for a receiver in school history.
