Crossville finished the 1961 season with a perfect 10-0 record, it's first undefeated, untied season in school history. Crossville would be ranked in the polls for most of the season. Sidney Lanier would be awarded the championship recognized by the State even though it had a loss to finish 9-1-0. Crossville would enter the Cleburne County game with an 8-0 record and the State's No.1 Ranking in the AA Poll. However, they only led Lineville by .01%.
When the final poll would be released, Lineville would edge out Crossville in a razor thin poll to win the State Championship while leaving Crossville to have to settle for Runner-Up. Crossville not being around a big media hub certainly hurt them with pollsters who didn't play even get to see Crossville play. Coach Hearn would win coach of the year. Crossville would be proud, but disappointed by coming so close and being left out of the championship mix. Crossville would have to wait 25 years for another such chance at the title.
Coach Hearn would later coach Tarrant and Etowah. He won a state championship in 1971 with a 13-0 season.
