CROSSVILLE HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL STANDING

Crossville High School defeated Flat Rock High at Crossville Thanksgiving Day by the

score of 25-0. Crossville's first touchdown came on the fourth play of the game when

Clifton Edwards skirted the visitor's left end for twenty yards. On the first play after

he kickoff, he had run the oppisite end for fifty yards.

The second score for Crossville came in less than five minutes, when Jerome Gaines,

diminutive little halfback, ran a punt through the entire Flat Rock team for seventy five

yards and a touchdown. Gains added another six points, when he received a pass

from Edwards, and stepped over the last white line. Clayton, one of the best blocking

backs in Alabama high school football took another pass from Edwards and

sidestepped thirty yards through the Flat Rock secondary defense for the final score.

Flat Rock displayed a deceptive attack, and had one good backfield man, by the

name of Gains, who hit the Crossville line for gains a number of times.

Six men played their last game for Crossville Turkey Day, and ended their career in

first class style. They were Claude Jones halfback; Baxter Clayton fullback; Clifton

Edwards, halfback and the outstanding triple-threat man in the county. Nolen Spence,

tackle; Fred Camp, stellar little guard; Carter B. Shipp, center; and Clovis "Bill"

Russell, who has not been able to be in a game this year on account of a broken leg

sustained in the first of the season.

Crossville has had the most sucessfull season this year, since the sport was inagurated

four years ago. They have won seven games, tied two, and lost one....Besides the fine

record, this team has the distinction of being the not only the first but only team in the

county to defeat Geraldine over a period of four years.

Also of interest is  a major upset of heavily favored Minor High from Birmingham on the road. I was

told that the team had rode the train from Collinsville to Birmingham.  The Lions finished the season

with a 9 game unbeaten streak (7 wins and 2 ties) This would be the longest of such streaks for many

years until 1961. Crossville also played Snead Seminary (what is now Snead State Junior College) for

the first time that we have record of. Clifton Edwards the Lions' outstanding halfback was the very first

athlete in any sport to make the All State team. Crossville would not have to wait very long for it's next.

Rupert McCall was in waiting.
