1926

The Crossville Lions that we know today, actually began in 1924. It appears that Crossville

had every intent to field a team in the fall of 1925 by having what Sand Mt Banner called a "tussle". The

very first school annual in 1925, mentioned a "football skirmish" in the fall of 1924.

However, it was not to be. For whatever reason, perhaps due to an overall low school enrollment, there

may not have been enough to complete a team. In the Spring of 1925, they were back at it again.

A "Jamboree" if you will. The 1926 Yearbook mentions the scrimmage with the hopes of fielding a squad for the following fall.

Excerpt from the SAND MOUNTAIN BANNER Sept. 1, 1926..

Full equipment for the Midgets will be in the hands of the coaches and the

preliminaries of practice will begin Monday afternoon. The schedule has not been

completed yet but as soon as Coach Fox arrives, the matter will be brought quickly

to a close. The midgets are expecting an interesting season.

Interesting to say the least. Who coach Fox is, remains a mystery.

Alton Daniel was actually the first coach. What makes it interesting, he was

actually from Geraldine. Coaching at CHS for the 1926 Season before returning

to Geraldine the following year.

Mr. Wymon Ingram will be the answer to the trivia question, Who scored

Crossville's touchdown? I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Ingram in 2001.

He was the last surviving member of the 1926 team.

Mr. Wymon Ingram and myself in 2001
Mr. Ingram scored the very first touchdown for the Lions
in 1926 as a seventh grader. He would finish his career as
a Lion in 1930. A Class act all the way. Thank you !
